The Planet Crafter Map and Locations Guide

Are you trying to find The Planet Crafter map? I’ll tell you how to unlock it and where you can find crashed ships, loot, and more!

Quicklinks: Map | Crashed Ships & Underground Bunkers | Storage Crate Locations | Golden Crate Locations | Ore Locations

How to Unlock The Planet Crafter Map

You have to complete six steps to unlock The Planet Crafter Map:

Loot a Rocket Engine or reach 175.00 kTI in Terraforming to unlock the recipe. Unlock the Launch Platform by reaching 345.00 kTI in Terraforming. Unlock the GPS Satellite T1 by finding and using Blueprint Microchips. Unlock the Map Screen by finding and using Blueprint Microchips. Launch a GPS Satellite T1 into orbit. Build a Map Screen in the area you want to see the map.

How the Planet Crafter Map Works

Unfortunately, The Planet Crafter map only shows you a small, local area — there is no way to see the entire playable area from the top down in the game as of Early Access version 0.4.004. (I did, however, manage to cook up a rudimentary map using alternative methods.)

How to Find Locations in The Planet Crafter with Coordinates

Here’s how to find locations in The Planet Crafter: If you look at the bottom left of your HUD, you’ll see a set of five numbers, like this:

221:12:432 : 5 : 60

These numbers represent the following:

X:Y:Z : ? : FPS

And here’s what they mean:

X – Horizontal Coordinates (East to West)

Y – Vertical Coordinates (Up and Down)

Z – Horizontal Coordinates (North to South)

? – Unknown

FPS – Your current frames per second.

The first three numbers list a specific location in the game world. If I give you those numbers, you can travel in-game until you’re at those coordinates and you’ll reach that exact location.

With that established, all of the points of interest in our guides (including the derelicts, Storage Chests, and Golden Chests in this guide) are accompanied with matching coordinates. This is how you can find locations in The Planet Crafter.

An Important Note About Loot Locations

Loot in The Planet Crafter will always spawn in the same location. If you go to the coordinates for one of the Storage Chests, you should find a Storage Chest there in your game, too.

However, the contents of these chests are not consistent. I’ve tested with the same chest on different files and found slightly different loot each time. This is likely due to this line in the patch notes for its Early Access launch:

– Randomly generated content of some crates is now depending on the terraformation level

That’s why the listed loot here is marked as “Potential Items” — I personally saw these items, but you might get something slightly different in your game. I got much of this loot in after having done a significant amount of Terraforming, so it’s possible that you might not get as much good stuff. It’s unclear if this affects Golden Chests.

Why You Should Wait to Open Storage Chests

Considering the above patch notes, it may be a good idea to wait until later in the game before you open any Storage Chests at all. It may increase your chances of getting more valuable loot. That said, you might have to open them anyway if you run out of critical resources before you can build Ore Extractors.

The Planet Crafter Map

I made this The Planet Crafter map by stitching together screenshots. It’s far from perfect, but it should give you a rough idea of what the overall game world looks like.

Do note that East is oriented to the top — for some reason, the game puts North on the left side of the map. This map reflects that design decision by also featuring East at the top.

The Planet Crafter Crashed Ship and Hidden Bunker Locations

This section covers any crashed ships, crashed satellites, abandoned facilities, underground bunkers, etc.

Derelict ships and hidden bunkers will often have debris or furniture that can be deconstructed for resources. Storage Crates and Blueprint Microchip Crates can be deconstructed for 1 Iron each.

The Planet Crafter Golden Crate Locations

Golden Crates are (as you might expect) Storage Crates that are colored gold. This isn’t just a paint job, though: in addition to their loot, all Golden Crates will give you 1 Aluminum and 1 Super Alloy when deconstructed.

Each area of the game appears to have a single Golden Crate dedicated to it. It’s well-worth finding them — aside from a cool decorative item, you’ll also get some rare resources!

The Planet Crafter Regional Information

*WARNING: Unmarked Spoilers*

Lakebed Starting Area

:::Description:::

This is the starting area where your Escape Pod first lands, and where most players typically build their first base. Since the area becomes flooded once the ice melts, it’s highly recommended that you keep any bases built here small and compact.

:::Resources:::

The main reason why most people recommend building a small mining base here despite the encroaching flood. This area is exceedingly rich in resources, Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium can all be found here in great abundance.

Steep Hill

:::Description:::

This area is largely dominated by the Crashed Freighter, and really only serves as a transit point between it and the Underground Cave Tunnel that leads to the Sulphur Fields.

:::Resources:::

The area is very sparsely populated with the same resources that can be found in the Lakebed Starting Area, the biggest concentration of which is near the Underground Cave System entrance.

Underground Cave Tunnels

:::Description:::

The tunnel connecting the Iridium Mines to the Sulphur Fields is little more than an resource-less archway, and is blocked off by unbreakable Ice that must be melted via Terraforming to gain access. Once the way has opened up, this particular tunnel is known as the “Iridium Gate” and is considered the primary route to the Sulphur Fields for players based near the Shoreline.

The tunnel connecting the Steep Hill to the Sulphur Fields is blocked on the Steep Hills side by unbreakable Ice that must be melted via Terraforming to gain access. A secondary wall of ice stands at the midway point, which again must be melted melted via ever greater Terraforming to breach. Once the way has opened up, this particular tunnel is known as the “Sulphur Gate” and is considered the primary route to the Sulphur Fields for players based on the Lake.

:::Resources:::

As mentioned above, the Iridium Gate has no resources.

On the other-hand, the Sulphur Gate contains a decent amount of both Osmium and Sulphur. In particular, the Sulphur Gate stands out as being the only cave where you can get Osmium before the Terraforming process has even begun. This is because the Sulphur Fields side of the tunnel isn’t blocked off by giant ice formations, and so you can get about six pieces of Osmium before reaching the midway ice wall.

Shoreline

:::Description:::

Not so much a biome, as a boundary. The Shoreline marks how far the water levels rise, and at which point it’s safe to build without risk of your base getting flooded.

Recommended Base Location

:::Description:::

Typically this is where everyone builds their main base. The area is large and flat; Excellent for almost any base design. This is also the most central location, with commute times of roughly a minute or less to any biome from here. The Crashed Cruiser also resides here, a somewhat underwhelming remnant wreck with half a dozen blue crates, and no terraforming equipment to deconstruct.

:::Resources:::

The area is peppered with a large amount of basic resources that are required by most structures and Terraforming equipment, Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium can all be found here.

Cracked Spires

:::Description:::

While visually impressive, Cracked Spires is a relatively small biome containing three giant shipping grates, only two of which are accessible, sadly the loot in these remnant wrecks is underwhelming to say the least. No, the real prize attraction of Cracked Spires is it’s Underground Cave System.

:::Resources:::

Cracked Spires has an average amount of resources, the usual suspects Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium can all be found here.

The Underground Cave System has an abundance of Iridium near the entrance and up to the halfway point, at which point an ice wall blocks off access to the caves Osmium deposits. The Cracked Spires Underground Cave System is widely considered one of the best natural sources of Iridium, especially in the early game.

Aluminium Hills

:::Description:::

A dark and dreary place that, despite the games lack of monsters, many players have reported a sense of unease and an increased BMP rate. Although, that might be because, as the name suggests, Aluminium Hills is full of the much coveted Aluminium, great big giant chunks of the stuff, that said it isn’t mine-able in this early version of the game.

:::Resources:::

While the large chunks of Aluminium are a no go, there are plenty of smaller pieces scattered throughout this biome that can be mined, alongside the traditional Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium. It is worth noting that the Aluminium deposits found here have a much darker colourisation, almost appearing like Magnesium from a distance.

Iridium Mine

:::Description:::

As the name suggests, the Iridium Mine is full of Iridium. However, unlike the cave in Cracked Spires, where the Iridium is all clumped together, here the Iridium is spread out far and wide, even embedded into the walls and stone pillars. The Cave has three tiers, each of which has sloped edges near the centre which allow access between tiers.

:::Resources:::

A great abundance of both the much coveted Iridium and Aluminium, along with the core resources of Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium.

Sulphur Fields

:::Description:::

The entire area is blanketed in a dense fog that makes it difficult to see resources on the ground.

:::Resources:::

Sulphur (called sulfur in game) is predominantly found here, and unlike the Sulphur found in cave systems, the Sulphur here will regenerate slowly over time just like resources found in other biomes. You can also find Aluminium, Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium here.

The Great Stormwall

:::The Name:::

Originally this area had quite a few names, so before I made my map I called for a popular vote on our Discord to decide on something concrete. There were A LOT of suggestions at first, but eventually “The Great Stormwall” was the most vaunted pick by quite the hefty margin. However, despite the popular vote, a few particularly snooty players have refused to recognise the majority decision, so expect this area to be occasionally referred to by other names.

:::Description:::

The most predominant feature of The Great Stormwall is the great stormwall that covers the entirety of it’s northernmost edge. Concealed behind this sandstorm wall, roughly near the midway point, is an Underground Cave System that contains both Osmium and Sulphur, but is blocked by ice that needs to be melted via Terraforming.

:::Resources:::

At first glance it might seem like the area only has Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium. However, you can find Super Alloy concealed by sandstorm wall, spaced a few metres apart running the length of the Stormwall.

Labyrinth

:::Description:::

A two tiered biome, the Labyrinth is maze of tight corridors and frequent dead ends, it is very easy to get turned around here without a compass, so it is recommended that you bring one.

:::Resources:::

The first tier has Aluminium, Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium. The second tier has Super Alloy, and can be accessed near the Crashed Space Station near the south-east corner of the biome.

Canyon

:::Description:::

The Canyon, a deep impression that goes down as deep as the Lakebed starting area, but strangely enough doesn’t flood, instead little puddles form scattered throughout the area. A small remnant wreck can be found in the north-eastern corner.

:::Resources:::

There are a few Blue Crates scattered around, alongside the usual suspects Cobalt, Ice, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, and Titanium.
