What Does ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’s Title Mean? The Symbolism Goes Deeper Than You’d Think

We’re less than two weeks away from the premiere of Fifty Shades of Grey, and that got me wondering, what does Fifty Shades of Grey mean anyway? I’ve just taken the title as a fact and then never really thought any more about it. (I was too busy musing over the content of the novel and film to worry about the title.) But a title says a lot about a work of fiction. It’s an extension of the writing itself. Or it is when you go to liberal arts school for creative writing. They really get on your case about good titles there and demand they add meaning to the piece.

So what is the title of Fifty Shades of Grey referring to? There are a few options. On the surface, Fifty Shades of Grey means roughly what you think it means: Christian Grey has a lot of facets of his personality. He can go from gentleman one minute to S&M manic the next. The book is showcasing all those shades of Grey’s character.

But the title is also a play on words. The phrase “shades of gray” usually refers to a situation that is not clear, particularly with regard to whether or not something is categorically evil. When doubt comes into play, things are neither black, nor white, but are in a gray area. Of course, Christian’s last name allowed the author to title the book the very clever Fifty Shades of Grey with it’s unique spelling of his last name.

Basically, it’s saying that Ana and Christian’s relationship exists in a gray area. It’s not defined by societal rules or the standards of typical relationships. It falls somewhere in the middle of wrong and right, but not dead center. It’s on a sliding scale that can lean toward either end of the spectrum depending on the situation.

As for the number 50, there are a lot of speculations as to why the author chose that number. Some have said that 50 is a lucky number. Googling the meaning of the number will return a lot of results. Some sources say it represents masculinity or passion. Other say that, according to the Bible, it represents salvation.

But most interestingly, data has found that the human eye can only see 32 shades of gray. So perhaps by choosing a number higher than that, the author is telling readers that you can’t see all of the facets of Grey’s character, and therefore you cannot judge him if you don’t have the full picture. It reinforces that theme of “shades of gray” confusion.

I might be reading too much into it. After all, there is a line in the novel where Christian tells Ana that he is “50 shades of f***ed up,” and she later refers to him as Mr. Fifty Shades, so it could just be that the author liked the number. But whatever the title’s true meaning, the content of the book definitely brings up some interesting conversation on those lines that define sex and relationships and the confusion that can come from falling in a gray area. For a title to spark a dialogue is pretty impressive. Perhaps E.L. James would pass my college writing courses after all.

Mysterious ’50 Shades of Grey’ character Christian Grey was based on Italian real estate agent

Selling houses just got sexy.

Christian Grey — the mysterious lead character in “50 Shades of Grey” — was based on a smolderingly hot Italian real estate agent.

Alessandro Proto, 39, is believed to have been British author E.L. James’ main inspiration when she came to pen the mega-successful steamy S&M trilogy.

The duo met back in 2010 when James was touring Italy writing about international celebrities snapping up properties in the country.

Proto, who claims to have brokered home deals with stars such as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna, spent two days travelling with the author from Milan to Lake Como.

He claims James featured several aspects of that journey in her books, where Grey slowly turns 21-year-old Anastasia Steele into his own personal sex slave.

“The firm Grey runs in the book is called Grey Enterprise Holding. Mine is called Proto Organization Holding,” the former encyclopedia salesman, born in Milan, said.

“When I met E.L. James I used to drive a R8 Audi,” he added, saying it was also mirrored in the fiction.

Proto says the top floor location of his office was used in the book.

“My office is located at the 8th floor. It is the highest in the building. I came from nothing, so I see top floors as a metaphor for achievement and success,” he said.

Notoriously media-shy Proto, who’s only given four interviews in the last four years, claims his “mystique” also influenced the saga’s main character.

“Christian Grey doesn’t like speaking to reporters, so he builds up a mystery that surrounds him,” he said.

“Everyone knows he made it, but nobody knows how he reached success. Same with me,” he added.

Proto also revealed that, during his time with James, she asked why he never granted interviews. “I just told her the truth. I wanna focus on my job, nothing else,” he replied.

Despite inspiring the kinky star of the book, Proto revealed – however – that his own sexual tastes were a little more “old fashioned.”

“Everything that has to do with S&M is pure imagination, I assure you. I’m an old fashioned man when it comes to sex, I’m not into that kind of fantasies,” he added.

Proto said he’d been bombarded with fan mail ever since his name was linked as being the inspiration behind the character, with a group of Swiss women even founding a fan club.

“When they told me I couldn’t believe my ears. I started receiving lots of indecent proposals on my work mail,” he added.

“At times it can be pretty annoying. I don’t like gossip and showbiz, I’m a businessman, that’s what I do for a living and it is my main purpose in life.”

And he revealed that he only made it through a few pages of the book.

“I started reading it because I was curious to know what the press was writing about me, but I quit after a few pages,” he said.

“It’s really not my thing. I think it was a well planned marketing operation though. Huge one. But that’s it.”

Proto, tipped to have a cameo role in the upcoming “50 Shades” movie, could be forgiven for not wanting to focus on his celebrity status.

He was arrested on Valentine’s Day last year on charges of manipulating the financial market. Granted parole, it will be served up on Valentine’s Day 2015.

Fifty Shades of Grey made a bunch of money, and that’s okay

Amazing b.o.take for 50 Shades. Cinemas full of middle aged women’s groups. But anecdotal evidence they all disappointed! — Rupert Murdoch (@rupertmurdoch) February 14, 2015

This is a tweet written by News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch about the motion picture Fifty Shades of Grey. Because tweets are limited to 140 characters, I will do Mr. Murdoch the favor of unpacking his cultural observation / joke.

Fifty Shades of Grey has made a lot of money.

Fifty Shades of Grey’s appeal is limited to a specific demographic (“middle aged women’s groups”).

Subtext: this demographic has questionable legitimacy.

Fifty Shades of Grey was not critically well-received by this demographic (and, it goes without saying, actual film critics).

Subtext: a film that grossed $235 million globally in its opening weekend has questionable legitimacy.

Fifty Shades of Grey had the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a woman (Sam Taylor-Johnson) in box office history. It grossed $81.7 million domestically in its first three days, over $10 million more than the Catherine Hardwicke-directed Twilight, which made $69.6 million in its debut. In somewhat fuzzier demographic terms, you could make a strong argument that Fifty Shades of Grey is the largest opening weekend for a female-targeted motion picture. It is further proof for those that still stubbornly refuse to believe that women will go to the movies when they are marketed to.

Further proof for those that still stubbornly refuse to believe that women will go to the movies

It’s reminiscent of the opening weekend for The Heat, the 2013 buddy cop film starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which surprised a lot of industry types when it trounced the Channing Tatum / Jamie Foxx summer action flick White House Down. Perhaps that success could be explained away by the fact that The Heat was a raunchy Apatow-lineage comedy, and men did not have to be embarrassed about enjoying it just as much as people who have the same chromosomes as its stars. Fifty Shades, though — that’s just for the ladies, right? (And their significant others, who are almost universally depicted as being “dragged” to the film.) How much appeal could an explicit, ultra-soft-core S&M fantasy possibly have in a global market? Especially one that, by all accounts, is not very good?

’50 Shades’ officially the biggest opening for any film directed by a woman. Not sure this is a good thing… — PRNewser (@PRNewser) February 16, 2015

It’s incredible that anyone could still underestimate Fifty Shades after it became an international best-selling book and nearly single-handedly gave everyone an excuse to get a Kindle, but here we are, in a fresh tidal wave of “there goes culture” hand-wringy jokes. No, Fifty Shades of Grey is not a very good movie, and it’s just the latest example of a marketing hypefest that, depending on your expectations, ended in disappointment. But as Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci pointed out, there’s a specifically gendered dismissal of Fifty Shades that is infecting the bulk of the criticism of the film.

Women want to see movies that are made with them in mind. The quality of these movies is of secondary import. We want good, Oscar-worthy films made with us in mind. We want R-rated comedies made with us in mind. Sometimes, we also want trash and sensationalist bullshit made with us in mind. (Just like men — I know, crazy, right?) We want to see evidence that studios want our money — that they have remembered that we have money, and moreover, have the wherewithal to spend it wherever we want.

Women have money and the wherewithal to spend it wherever we want

Despite the leaps and bounds television has made over the years, one thing that film will continue to have in its favor is the lack of a target demographic. All that matters is getting people into seats; while there is some in-film advertisement in the form of product placement (perhaps most egregiously in your precious, important, not-at-all-disposable superhero movies), how we spend our money after buying a movie ticket is not as important. Movies are not a means to an end in the way that television, on some level, will always be.

So let’s say that Mr. Murdoch’s hypothesis — that Fifty Shades was uniformly seen by “middle aged women’s groups” (whatever that is) — is in fact correct. Follow up question: Who cares? Their money still works, even if they’re not in the market for a Chevy truck or a Gillette razor. And Universal, to its credit, is apparently wise to this: the second and third installments of the Fifty Shades trilogy have already been green lit.
